Sonnet 145
Flowers for my Baby

There is actually some argument that Shakespeare didn't write this one at all. One of the reasons is that each line contains eight syllables instead of the usual ten. It is also much lighter in tone and considered by some as being less mature. Although it is simple is it a lot of fun.

Those lips that Love's own hand did make

Cupid himself could have made the beautiful lips of my lover.

Breathed forth the sound that said 'I hate'

But those wonderful lips said a hateful thing.

To me that languished for her sake;

She said it to me - the person who has so suffered for ours love's sake.

But when she saw my woeful state,
Straight in her heart did mercy come,

When she saw how upset I was she calmed down and pitied me.

Chiding that tongue that ever sweet
Was used in giving gentle doom,

Apologizing for her violent outburst because normally when she criticizes me she does it kindly.

And taught it thus anew to greet:

She starts again trying to correct what she has done and said.

'I hate' she altered with an end,
That followed it as gentle day
Do follow night,

She begins again and ends it with such a difference that it is like night turned to day.

who like a fiend
From heaven to hell is flown away;

The hateful words that she first uttered were like devilish words intended to take me to hell - but now they are thankfully flown away.

'I hate' from hate away she threw,
And saved my life, saying 'not you.'

She now says that her words were not aimed at me but for someone or something else. She says that she does not hate me. Phew! What a relief!
